Illinois Works Pre-Apprenticeship ProgramLaunch your career in construction and building trades with our NO-COST program. We prepare you to successfully transition to a Department of Labor registered apprenticeship in the trades.
Program Goals
Our Mission

The Illinois Works Pre-Apprenticeship program is designed to increase the number of qualified apprentices in the construction and building trades - particularly women, people of color and veterans. The program also provides second-chance opportunities for justice-involved individuals and those facing barriers to employment by preparing candidates to successfully enter registered apprenticeship programs and pursue long-term careers in the construction industry.
Stipends
Stipends are paid to participants based on performance
including attending mandatory sessions and passing
module assessments. Visit individual program sites for
specific stipend information.
Industry Recognized Certifications / Credentials
- All programs offer either NCCER Core or NABTU Certification
- OSHA 10-Hour Construction Certification
- First Aid/CPR Certification
- Test-taking skills
- Employment Skills
- All programs offer 150+ hours of instruction over at least 6 weeks.Visit the Illinois Works Pre-apprenticeship Program website for individual program information.
Eligibility Requirements
Program Applicants must be/have:
- 18 years old
- Illinois resident
- High school diploma or GED/HiSET
- Able to pass a drug test
- Driver’s License (by completion of the program)
- Interest in a career in the construction & building trades
Program open to those charged with non-violent felonies or misdemeanors.
All Illinois residents are welcome with an emphasis on women, people of color, and veterans.
Additional Criteria
The following criteria are not requirements but will help participants be more successful beyond the program. All Illinois Works programs can offer support services on these criteria.
